The Scout Update: The Story Continues

posted by Pie21 in News |

Admittedly it was a day or two ago, but there’s an otherwise brand new update available for TF2. It adds another interesting and diverse bunch of features and fixes to further ensure the game is prepared for the unveiling of the Scout Update (note the heavy buff).

Again, it’s a long list so you can read it by yourself, but some of the more interesting items are:

  • Added custom crosshair support
  • I haven’t tried this out yet, but it appears to let you replace any crosshair in the game with any custom crosshair you like. You can define the image, scale and colour in the Options→Multiplayer menu. Note that this includes the non-existent Sniper unscoped crosshair, meaning you can lay those little dots of monitor-inhabiting Blu-Tak to rest.

  • Modified critical hit calculation. Overall, critical hit chance is now much more recent-performance based
  • I still don’t really know how critical hits are calculated, so this is a cool one. Given what the numbers say, the update slashes the base chance of a crit and slightly nerfed the bonus chance given from maximum recent damage dealt, but makes it easier to get the higher bonus chances (800 damage for max, down from 1600).
EDIT: More on this in the recent TF2 blog post.

  • Slight reduction (improvement) of the minigun’s spread
  • To toast that Scout spam a little more easily.

  • Increased flare direct hit damage from 20 to 30
  • YES! I love the flare gun, so this just gives it more viability.

  • Sniper rifle now supports Crit Boost state like all other weapons (i.e. Kritzkrieg makes all shots critical hits)
  • This should be fun to experiment with, especially in conjunction with the possibility of an unscoped crosshair.

  • Stealthed spies are no longer able to pickup the intelligence. They must uncloak first
  • Good move Valve. Should make it possible to defend the intel when it’s out in the open.

  • Increased soldier primary ammo count from 16 to 20
  • Fair enough, the nerf to 16 was pretty extreme.
